Best photoshoot LOCATIONS in Raleigh, NC: Part - I
Families often ask where they should do their sessions. My answer is always the same: where do you envision your family spending time together, and how does that feel? Some families love wide open fields, others lean toward more intimate spaces like flower gardens or historic buildings, while others prefer more structured backdrops.
When it comes to photoshoot locations, Raleigh has it all: wide-open fields with tall grass or short grass, wildflower fields, rolling hills, rivers and creeks, nature trails, and wooded areas that feel almost enchanted (yes, really). You’ll also find historic buildings, charming markets, and just about anything else you can imagine.
NC Museum of Art Park:
This 164-acre museum park is, without a doubt, one of the most popular photoshoot locations in Raleigh. It offers a wide variety of settings, from art installations, meadows, trails, ponds, flower fields, and ornamental grasses to unique architectural backdrops. The open spaces are massive and perfect for a lifestyle session where children can run around and explore. While the park offers visual interest year-round, my most favorite time to shoot there is from late summer through fall, when the grass and foliage turn deeper green, goldenrods are blooming giving my images those rich, beautiful golden tones.
Ideal for:
- Family sessions
- Maternity sessions
- Childhood sessions
- Senior/Grad sessions
Perfect for: all season
Dorothea Dix Park:
Dorothea Dix park is extremely popular for their annual sunflower field. Every year, I host a sunflower mini session here and they always sold out. But the park offers more than just sunflowers, featuring wildflower fields, picturesque white fences, and plenty of open space for a variety of looks. As the park continues to develop, it will also feature new trails, meadows with native wildflowers, creeks, and water features, making it one of Raleigh's premier outdoor destinations.

- Senior/Grad sessions
Perfect for: Spring and Summer sessions
WRAL Azalea Garden:
Every spring, the WRAL Azalea Garden burst into colors with thousands of beautiful Azalea blooms. In addition to Azaleas, the garden features lots flowering trees, tulips, and pansies among others. It’s one of my favorite locations to shoot in the early spring because most other deciduous trees and flowers are barely leafing out at this time of year while I get to immerse in all the vibrant colors.

- Maternity sessions
- Childhood sessions
- Senior/Grad sessions
Perfect for: Early Spring and Summer sessions
Fred Fletcher Park:
Fred Fletch park is another favorite from early spring to late Fall, offering colorful blooms and plenty of visual interests throughout the season. The park features landscaped gardens, walking path, open green spaces, and historic buildings that offer a mix of natural and architectural elements. I absolutely love that different section of the park offers completely different looks to suit each of my session.
Ideal for:

Perfect for: Spring through late Fall sessions
Anderson Point Park:
This lesser-known park is, in my opinion, quite the hidden gem. It offers expansive open spaces, walking trails lined with tall grasses and wildflowers,
and a peaceful, natural feel that makes it easy to forget you're still in the city. What I love about Anderson Point Park is that while it's beautiful throughout the year, the visual interest in the winter is especially striking, with golden grasses and muted tones creating a unique backdrop that really stand out from many other locations in our area.
Ideal for:
- Family sessions
- Maternity sessions
- Childhood sessions
- Senior/Grad sessions
Perfect for: Spring through late Fall
Raleigh Rose Garden:
With more than 1,000 roses planted in beautifully arranged rows, the Historic Raleigh Rose Garden offers a charming and intimate setting for a photo session. The garden comes alive from spring through fall, providing a colorful backdrop filled with texture, symmetry, and classic garden beauty. Its smaller, more secluded feel makes it especially well-suited for those who prefer a quieter setting and timeless aesthetic. One of the things I love about this location is that it also features beautifully landscaped garden beds, providing a variety of additional backdrops.

There's no single "best" location for a photoshoot. Each location offers something unique, and the right choice usually comes down to the vibe and feel you want in your images and how your family naturally interacts together.
If you're unsure which location fits your family best, I'm always happy to help guide that decision based on your kids ages, your wardrobe, and the overall look you're drawn to. The goal is to choose a space where your family can feel relax and be themselves, because that's what creates the most meaningful pictures.
